Bass Lake

Bass Lake

The lake is calm tonight
The swan glides by
Having made another circuit of the lake
There are geese and ducks
The lake is surrounded by pine trees, firs and maples
And large rhododendron bushes not yet in bloom
And my heart too feels a sense of peace.

I remembered Arnold and the calm sea
And the echoes he heard of Sophocles on the Aegean
Bringing the note of sadness in
But I am hearing a different song
It is still faint like the gentle breeze I feel
On this summer evening in the mountains
A sense of gratitude for all that lives
And all that passes and lives again
A sense of wonder at the stillness
As I wait for the night
And the stars to come.
